Washington handed International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) a $1 billion check this week to build America’s first dedicated quantum chip foundry.

Wall Street responded with something it has done only seven times in the company’s more than half-century history.

IBM shares closed Thursday at $252.97, marking a one-day jump of roughly 12%. Week-to-date through Friday, IBM is posting its best-performing week since October 2002.

The catalyst was a federal letter of intent under the Biden-era CHIPS and Science Act to seed IBM’s Anderon, a quantum chip wafer foundry, which will fabricate 300-millimeter quantum wafers in Albany, New York.

A Weekly Rally This Rare Happened Just Seven Times In IBM’s History

A weekly advance of 15% or more in IBM has appeared just seven times since the company went public in 1967.

The most recent comparable episode before this week landed in October 2002, near the bottom of the dot-com collapse, when the stock rose 16% in a week.

On average, IBM was higher one month later in five of six cases and higher a year later in four of six. But the six-month window is the soft spot. The stock won only a third of the time over that horizon, and the average return there is slightly negative.

What Is Anderon And Why Does It Matter

The CHIPS and Science Act is the 2022 law that uses federal money to bring advanced chip manufacturing back onto American soil.

This week, the Department of Commerce committed $2 billion of it to nine quantum companies. IBM was the largest single recipient with $1 billion. It shares funds with Anderon, which IBM describes as the country’s first pure-play quantum foundry.

A foundry is a contract factory. It does not design the product. It manufactures it for whoever places the order.

The closest analogy is the relationship that already exists in conventional chips, where one specialist factory builds processors for dozens of rival design houses.

Anderon would do the same for quantum hardware, supplying wafers to IBM and to its competitors alike.

Other smaller beneficiaries included GlobalFoundries, Atom Computing, Diraq, D-Wave, Infleqtion, PsiQuantum, Quantinuum and Rigetti Computing Inc. (NASDAQ:RGTI)

IBM is matching the federal $1 billion with $1 billion of its own cash, plus intellectual property and staff. In return, the Donald Trump administration takes a minority, non-controlling equity stake.

The structure mirrors recent federal deals in semiconductors and rare earths.

GlobalFoundries Inc. (NASDAQ:GFS) on Thursday launched Quantum Technology Solutions, a new business aimed at scaling U.S. quantum computing manufacturing capabilities.

The company said it will manufacture quantum processor units, cryogenic control chips, advanced packaging and superconducting interconnects for utility-scale quantum systems.

The U.S. Department of Commerce signed a letter of intent to award GlobalFoundries $375 million to support the expansion. The department will also receive a strategic equity stake of about 1% in the company.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the investment would help strengthen domestic quantum technology leadership and create high-paying U.S. jobs.

GlobalFoundries said the initiative is supported by partnerships with quantum companies including PsiQuantum Corp., Quantinuum and Diraq, along with support from Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) subsidiary Google Quantum AI, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) and NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA).

Technical Analysis

The stock has shown remarkable performance over the last year, up 87.52%. Currently, it is trading significantly above its key moving averages, with the price sitting 13.9% above the 20-day simple moving average (SMA) and 85.1% above the 200-day SMA.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) stock rose Monday after the company signed a gas sales precedent agreement with Glenfarne Group to support the Alaska LNG project.

Alaska LNG Agreement Supports Energy Security

ConocoPhillips and Glenfarne Alaska LNG LLC, a subsidiary of Glenfarne Group, have signed a gas sales precedent agreement to supply natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope for Phase One of the Alaska LNG project.

The 30-year agreement gives Alaska LNG enough committed natural gas volumes to support a final investment decision for Phase One and meet the state’s projected energy needs.

Phase One includes a 739-mile pipeline aimed at strengthening Alaska’s long-term energy security as Cook Inlet production declines. Phase Two will add LNG export facilities in Nikiski.

With the agreement, Alaska LNG now has supply commitments from all major North Slope producers, including Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) , Hilcorp Alaska, and Great Bear Pantheon LLC, a subsidiary of Pantheon Resources.

Glenfarne owns 75% of the project, while the State of Alaska owns the remaining 25% through the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation.

Quarterly Earnings Top Wall Street Estimates

Last month, ConocoPhillips reported first-quarter earnings of $2.2 billion, or $1.78 per share, compared with $2.8 billion, or $2.23 per share, a year earlier. Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:CSIQ) reported first-quarter results on Thursday that topped Wall Street estimates on both revenue and earnings, driven by stronger-than-expected energy storage shipments and improved margins.

Shares of the solar and Energy storage company traded lower following the results.

Revenue totaled $1.077 billion, down 10% year over year but above the analyst estimate of $950.382 million and at the high end of the company’s guidance range.

The company reported a GAAP net loss attributable to shareholders of $32 million, or 71 cents per share, compared with a loss of $34 million, or 69 cents per share, a year earlier.

The EPS result beat the analyst estimate of a loss of 73 cents per share.

The company also announced the appointment of Colin Parkin as chief executive officer, effective May 14, succeeding founder Shawn Qu, who transitioned to executive chairman and chief technology officer.

Margins Improve As Shipments Beat Guidance

Gross margin improved to 25.1% from 11.7% a year earlier, supported by a $93 million IEEPA tariff refund benefit.

Solar module shipments totaled 2.5 GW, exceeding guidance of 2.2 GW to 2.4 GW, while battery energy storage shipments reached 2.1 GWh, above guidance of 1.7 GWh to 1.9 GWh.

Solar module shipments declined 64% year over year, while storage shipments rose 142%.

U.S. Manufacturing Expansion Continues

Canadian Solar said its 5 GWp Mesquite, Texas solar module facility is expected to expand to 10 GWp capacity in the second half of 2026.

The company also began trial production at its HJT solar cell plant in Jeffersonville, Indiana, with commercial operations targeted for July 2026.

Storage Backlog And Development Pipeline Expand

The company’s e-STORAGE segment had contracted backlog, including long-term service agreements, of $3.5 billion as of May 8.

Recurrent Energy’s solar project pipeline stood at 23.7 GWp, and its battery storage pipeline totaled 80.6 GWh as of March 31.

Operating cash outflow was $209 million in the quarter. Canadian Solar ended the period with $1.9 billion in cash and total debt of $6.8 billion.

Q2 Outlook Trails Estimates

For the second quarter, Canadian Solar forecast revenue of $1 billion to $1.2 billion, below the analyst estimate of $1.520 billion.

The company expects gross margin of 13% to 15%, solar module shipments of 3.1 GW to 3.3 GW, and battery energy storage shipments of 2.8 GWh to 3.2 GWh.

Management cited ongoing solar margin pressure, lithium carbonate price fluctuations, policy uncertainty, and geopolitical volatility as headwinds.

On Holding AG (NYSE:ONON) shares traded lower in premarket trading Tuesday after the company reported first-quarter fiscal 2026 results that topped Wall Street estimates and reaffirmed its full-year sales outlook.

On Holding Earnings Snapshot

The company reported record first-quarter net sales of 831.9 million Swiss francs, up 14.5% year over year and 26.4% on a constant-currency basis.

Growth was broad-based across direct-to-consumer sales, which rose 16.4%, and wholesale revenue, which increased 13.3%, driven by stronger global demand and higher customer engagement.

Adjusted earnings rose to 0.37 Swiss franc per share from 0.21 Swiss franc per share in the prior-year quarter.

In U.S. dollar terms, adjusted EPS came in at 47 cents, beating analyst estimates of 32 cents. Revenue totaled $1.06 billion, slightly above the consensus estimate of $1.05 billion.

Profitability also improved during the quarter. Gross margin expanded 430 basis points year over year to 64.2%, while adjusted EBITDA margin increased to 21.0% from 16.5% a year earlier. The company attributed the gains to strong full-price selling, operational efficiencies and leverage, despite tariff-related pressures.

On Holding ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of 1.02 billion Swiss francs, while net working capital increased 14.1% year over year to 650.8 million Swiss francs.

Segment And Regional Performance

Regionally, EMEA revenue rose 22.8% to 207.1 million Swiss francs, the Americas grew 3.1% to 450.7 million Swiss francs, and Asia-Pacific sales surged 44.4% to 174.0 million Swiss francs.

By product category, footwear revenue increased 12.2% to 763.7 million Swiss francs. Apparel sales jumped 45.1% to 55.3 million Swiss francs, while accessories revenue climbed 70.7% to 12.9 million Swiss francs.

The company said retail expansion continued with improved store productivity and planned openings in Stockholm, São Paulo and Sydney. On Holding also highlighted continued innovation momentum, including the broader rollout of LightSpray technology and new lifestyle product launches.

On Holding Outlook

The company reaffirmed its fiscal 2026 outlook for at least 23% constant-currency sales growth, implying a minimum of 3.51 billion Swiss francs in reported sales at current exchange rates.

The company also raised its profitability guidance and now expects gross margin of at least 64.5% and adjusted EBITDA margin between 19.5% and 20.0%.

On Holding said its raised outlook reflects strong operations and continued premium brand execution. The guidance also factors in a 20% additional tariff on products imported into the U.S. from Vietnam and does not include any possible tariff refunds.

Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS) shares rose Wednesday after the company reported fiscal second-quarter 2026 results that topped Wall Street expectations, driven by growth across its entertainment, sports and experiences businesses.

Disney Q2 Earnings Beat Wall Street Estimates

Disney reported adjusted earnings of $1.57 per share for the quarter, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $1.49. Revenue increased 7% year over year to $25.17 billion, ahead of analyst estimates of $24.76 billion.

Entertainment, ESPN And Parks Drive Segment Growth

The entertainment segment, which includes traditional television networks, direct-to-consumer streaming and film operations, posted revenue of $11.72 billion, up 10% from a year earlier.

The sports segment, led by ESPN, reported revenue growth of 2% to $4.61 billion.

Disney’s experiences segment, which includes theme parks, resorts and consumer products, generated revenue of $9.49 billion, up 7% year over year.

Operating Income, Cash Flow And Buyback Update

Consolidated operating income rose 4% to $4.60 billion during the quarter. The experiences business led segment operating income with $2.62 billion, followed by entertainment at $1.34 billion and sports at $652 million.

Operating cash flow increased 2.38% year over year to $6.91 billion, while free cash flow totaled $4.94 billion for the quarter.

Domestic parks and resorts revenue climbed 6% to $6.92 billion, while international parks revenue rose 11% to $1.6 billion.

Disney also raised its fiscal 2026 share repurchase target to $8 billion from its prior forecast of $7 billion.

Streaming, ESPN And Experiences Support Growth Outlook

The company said it expects growth to accelerate in the second half of fiscal 2026, supported by higher streaming investments, ESPN’s direct-to-consumer strategy and continued expansion within Disney Experiences.

Disney said second-quarter segment operating income modestly exceeded guidance, primarily because revenue growth outpaced expectations.

The company outlined several long-term growth initiatives, including investments in major intellectual property franchises, international expansion and technology-driven monetization efforts.

Disney+ Engagement And Sports Partnerships In Focus

Disney highlighted growth drivers including stronger Disney+ engagement, local original programming outside the United States, upcoming franchise film releases, ESPN content agreements, its NFL transaction, expanded MLB relationships, CW Sports on ESPN and DraftKings account integration.

The company also pointed to future growth opportunities within Disney Experiences, including Disney Adventure, World of Frozen, a planned Japan cruise ship and a new Abu Dhabi theme park resort. Disney additionally cited its partnership with Epic Games, artificial intelligence opportunities, marketing efficiencies and margin expansion as potential long-term value drivers.

Fiscal 2026 And 2027 Guidance

For fiscal 2026, Disney expects adjusted earnings per share growth of about 12%, excluding the impact of the 53rd week. Including the additional week, the company projects adjusted EPS growth of about 16%.

Disney expects total segment operating income to reach approximately $5.3 billion in the third quarter. The company said demand across its domestic parks and resorts remains strong, though it continues to monitor macroeconomic uncertainty affecting consumers.

For fiscal 2027, Disney reiterated expectations for double-digit adjusted EPS growth, excluding the impact of the 53rd week.

Origin Materials Inc. (NASDAQ:ORGN) shares are down on Monday following the company’s announcement of a strategic plan to sell its technology and wind down operations.

This news comes as the company aims to maximize shareholder value amid ongoing financial struggles.

Origin Materials Plans Technology Sale And Wind-Down

Origin Materials’ Board of Directors has approved a reduction in force to fund the continued qualification of customers and the strategic sale of its PET cap technology.

The company expects to wind down operations following these initiatives, with a plan for liquidation and dissolution pending shareholder approval.

As part of the reduction in force, members of the executive team will be leaving the company, with John Bissell stepping down as CEO while continuing to serve on the Board of Directors, and CFO and COO Matt Plavan appointed as interim CEO.

“Our ongoing work to support customer qualification processes and to optimize our products for manufacturing is a critical prerequisite to commercially scaling this technology, and continues to be our primary focus during this period,” Plavan commented.

“We previously reported that, absent near-term financing and reductions in operating expenses, our existing cash and cash equivalents would allow us to continue our planned operations into the third quarter of 2026,” Plavan further added.

In March, Origin Materials announced a 1-for-30 reverse stock split.

It should have been a clean beat. Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) posted 33% revenue growth to $56.31 billion, delivered $32.23 billion in operating cash flow, and guided the next quarter as high as $61 billion.

And then came the line that mattered.

The Number That Changed Everything

Buried in the release was the new capex range: $125 billion to $145 billion for 2026, up from $115 billion to $135 billion. That was enough.

The stock dropped sharply after hours—not because the business is weak, but because the cost of staying in the AI race is rising faster than investors are comfortable with.

This isn’t happening in isolation. Big tech’s AI spend is now pushing toward $700 billion, and markets are starting to draw a line between spending and returns.

But the reaction to Meta stood out.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) raised its capex outlook to as much as $190 billion and rallied.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) flagged rising AI infrastructure costs and held steady.

Meta didn’t get the same benefit of the doubt.

That gap comes down to visibility.

Alphabet and Microsoft can point to cloud revenue as a near-term return on AI infrastructure. Meta’s payoff is harder to model—spread across ad systems, engagement improvements, and longer-cycle bets like Llama.

The fundamentals are still solid. Growth is there. Cash flow is strong. But the market is recalibrating what it wants to see next.

Because in this phase of the AI trade, spending alone isn’t enough.

It needs to convert.
