For years, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) showed that a technology company could keep investing for growth while returning enormous amounts of cash to shareholders. Now, SK hynix Inc. (NASDAQ:SKHY) appears to be following a similar playbook.

Its record 40 trillion won ($28.6 billion) share buyback isn’t just a response to a falling stock price—it signals a broader shift in how the AI memory leader intends to deploy the cash generated by the industry’s biggest boom in years.

Apple’s Capital Return Strategy Is Becoming SK Hynix’s Blueprint

SK Hynix announced plans to repurchase and cancel 24.07 million shares over the next three months while raising its shareholder return commitment to more than 50% of cumulative free cash flow generated between 2025 and 2027. The company also said future returns could include both fixed and special dividends.

The announcement follows weeks of investor pressure.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that shareholders were urging both SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd (OTC:SSNLF) to return more of their AI-driven cash windfalls through buybacks and dividends. Investors argued that sitting on massive cash balances risked reinforcing concerns that today’s AI profits may prove cyclical rather than durable.

Apple emerged repeatedly as the benchmark.

In the Reuters analysis, investors pointed to Apple’s capital allocation strategy as an example of how a cash-rich technology company can reward shareholders while continuing to invest heavily in future growth.

Apple launched a landmark capital return program in 2013 that combined steadily expanding buybacks with growing dividends, helping establish shareholder returns as a core part of its investment case.

The AI Memory Boom Has Created an Apple-Like Cash Machine

The comparison isn’t about products—it’s about cash generation.

SK Hynix ended the second quarter with approximately 69 trillion won in net cash, fueled by surging demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in AI accelerators. At the same time, the company continues investing aggressively in manufacturing capacity to support long-term AI demand.

Despite those investments, management believes it has room to return substantially more capital.

In announcing the buyback, SK Hynix said its current share price does not fully reflect the company’s “business competitiveness, robust cash generation capability, and mid-to-long-term growth potential.”

That language echoes the philosophy behind Apple’s long-running capital return strategy: confidence that future cash flows will remain strong enough to fund innovation while shrinking the share count.

That comparison is our inference. SK Hynix has not said it is modeling its strategy after Apple.

Why This Matters Beyond the Buyback

The record repurchase may prove to be only the beginning.

Beyond authorizing South Korea’s largest-ever treasury share cancellation, SK Hynix also changed its capital allocation framework by increasing its shareholder return target from “within 50%” of cumulative free cash flow to “over 50%”. Analysts see the move as a signal that additional buybacks and special dividends could follow if AI-driven cash generation remains robust.

The policy shift is arguably more significant than the buyback itself because it gives investors a clearer framework for how future AI profits could be distributed.

What SK Hynix Investors Should Watch Next

Apple’s shareholder return program didn’t transform investor sentiment because of a single buyback—it did so through years of disciplined capital allocation backed by durable cash generation.

SK Hynix is still in the early stages of that journey. The key question for investors is whether the company can continue generating AI-driven cash flows while maintaining heavy investment in next-generation memory.

If it can, this week’s record buyback may be remembered less as a one-off announcement and more as the beginning of a new capital allocation era for the world’s leading AI memory supplier.

Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC) just gave investors a new reason to pay attention to its $100-plus stock price. The chipmaker announced Monday that it plans to raise $15 billion through a public offering of common stock, with underwriters also receiving a 30-day option to purchase up to another $2.25 billion of shares.

The tech company’s shares fell more than 3% in premarket trading after the announcement as investors weighed the potential increase in the number of shares outstanding.

That is a significant change from simply filing a shelf registration. A shelf registration gives a company flexibility to sell securities later. Intel has now taken the next step and disclosed an actual amount it intends to raise.

Why Intel Wants the Money

Intel says it plans to use the net proceeds for capital expenditures and working capital. The company says customer demand remains strong, particularly as spending on AI computing accelerates, and points to opportunities in physical AI, custom silicon, advanced chip packaging and external foundry wafers.

That matters because Intel’s turnaround is becoming increasingly capital intensive.

The company recently raised its 2026 capital spending forecast to more than $20 billion and indicated that spending could rise further in 2027. Intel is investing in manufacturing capacity and advanced packaging as it tries to rebuild its position as a major contract chip manufacturer and compete more directly with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (NYSE:TSM).

The stock offering therefore gives Intel something its turnaround needs badly: more capital without adding another large debt burden.

The Catch for INTC Investors

The trade-off is straightforward.

When a company issues new shares, existing shareholders own a smaller percentage of the company unless the additional capital eventually creates enough value to offset that dilution.

The concern is already showing up in the stock. Intel shares have more than doubled this year, making the current market environment considerably more attractive for raising equity than it would have been before the turnaround rally.

The timing is therefore notable. Intel is effectively using the strength of its stock to help finance the next phase of its manufacturing comeback.

That does not automatically make the offering bad news. If Intel uses the proceeds to expand capacity that generates strong returns, the additional capital could ultimately create more value than the shares issued to raise it.

But investors now have a new number to watch: $15 billion. And if the underwriters exercise their full option, the offering could reach $17.25 billion.

For a company racing to turn its manufacturing ambitions into a profitable business, that is a lot of fresh capital — and a lot riding on Intel’s ability to make the investment pay off.

From AI Demo To AI Business

Belton argues that the market’s enthusiasm for AI accelerated after the arrival of more capable models and agentic coding platforms such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex.

The key difference is that AI agents are no longer viewed as futuristic concepts. They are increasingly being deployed across enterprises to automate software development, workflows and business processes.

As Belton put it, AI became “a revenue story, rather than just a research story.”

That transition has helped fuel a powerful rally across AI-linked stocks, from semiconductor makers to software companies.

Why Palo Alto Could Benefit

Unlike traditional software, AI agents are always-on, connected to multiple systems and capable of accessing large amounts of data. As organizations deploy more agents, they also create more identities, APIs and potential entry points for cyberattacks.

That dynamic is increasingly leading investors to view cybersecurity as a second-order AI trade.

Palo Alto Networks, with its broad platform spanning network, cloud and security operations, is positioned to benefit as enterprises look to secure expanding AI environments.

The Next Phase Of The AI Trade

For much of the past two years, the AI investment story centered on chips, servers and cloud infrastructure.

Now investors are beginning to ask a different question: who benefits after AI gets deployed?

Palo Alto’s rally suggests the market may already have an answer.

If a “second ChatGPT-like moment” is indeed underway, the next wave of AI winners may not just be the companies building AI. They could also be the companies protecting it.

It should have been a clean beat. Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) posted 33% revenue growth to $56.31 billion, delivered $32.23 billion in operating cash flow, and guided the next quarter as high as $61 billion.

And then came the line that mattered.

The Number That Changed Everything

Buried in the release was the new capex range: $125 billion to $145 billion for 2026, up from $115 billion to $135 billion. That was enough.

The stock dropped sharply after hours—not because the business is weak, but because the cost of staying in the AI race is rising faster than investors are comfortable with.

This isn’t happening in isolation. Big tech’s AI spend is now pushing toward $700 billion, and markets are starting to draw a line between spending and returns.

But the reaction to Meta stood out.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) raised its capex outlook to as much as $190 billion and rallied.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) flagged rising AI infrastructure costs and held steady.

Meta didn’t get the same benefit of the doubt.

The technical setup had started to crack even before the print.

After a strong run, the stock has now pulled back sharply, slipping toward key moving averages. Momentum has rolled over—MACD (moving average convergence/divergence) is retreating, RSI (relative strength index) is falling into the low 40s. This isn’t just noise; it’s a shift in trend strength.

Compared to peers, the divergence is becoming clearer. While names tied more directly to monetizable AI—like cloud—continue to hold structure, Meta is starting to lag.

Show Me The Payoff Moment

That gap comes down to visibility.

Alphabet and Microsoft can point to cloud revenue as a near-term return on AI infrastructure. Meta’s payoff is harder to model—spread across ad systems, engagement improvements, and longer-cycle bets like Llama.

The fundamentals are still solid. Growth is there. Cash flow is strong. But the market is recalibrating what it wants to see next.

Because in this phase of the AI trade, spending alone isn’t enough.

It needs to convert.

Rivian and Uber say they plan to roll out up to 50,000 R2 robotaxis across 25 cities spanning the U.S., Canada, and Europe by 2031.

That immediately shifts the conversation from “who has the best tech” to “who gets there first at scale.”

From Vision to Deployment

Tesla’s approach has been clear: build a vertically integrated autonomy stack and deploy it across millions of vehicles over time. The bet is that once Full Self-Driving is solved, scale follows naturally.

But Rivian and Uber are taking a different route—pairing vehicles, platform, and network upfront.

Uber brings demand. Rivian brings hardware. Together, they’re attempting to compress the timeline between development and real-world deployment. And with a defined rollout plan across multiple geographies, this looks less like experimentation and more like execution.

That contrast matters.

The Network Vs The Stack

At its core, this is shaping up as a philosophical split.

Tesla is building a closed system—owning the vehicle, the software, and eventually the network. Rivian and Uber are building an ecosystem, where each piece is optimized and then combined. Alphabet Inc.‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Waymo already runs commercial driverless robotaxi services in several U.S. cities, adding another layer of competition as the market scales.

In autonomous driving, scale isn’t just about vehicles—it’s about data. More miles mean faster learning. A 50,000-vehicle fleet operating across continents creates a data flywheel that can accelerate the process.

Tesla still has the advantage of an existing global fleet. But alliances like this could narrow that gap faster than expected.

The Race Just Got Real

The bigger shift here is psychological.

Robotaxis are no longer just a Tesla or Waymo narrative. They’re becoming a competitive market.

A multi-city, multi-continent rollout signals that autonomy is moving closer to commercialization—not just promises. And it suggests that the race may not be won by the company with the best model alone, but by the one that can combine technology with distribution and execution.

Tesla isn’t out of the race. But it’s no longer running alone.

“The sizable U.S. debt load and the impact of higher rates on that debt could push the Fed toward further rate cuts,” Egilinsky told Benzinga in an exclusive interview. “A lower-rate environment, especially under a newly appointed Fed chair later in the year, could be a tailwind for silver prices.”

Muted Volatility, Rising Metals

What’s striking is that precious metals have already rallied without a classic fear trigger. As Egilinsky pointed out, “the last two years where the VIX has been mostly muted, yet gold and silver have rallied sharply.”

That breaks the traditional crisis-only narrative. Silver, in particular, is benefiting from a different kind of macro regime—one where policy easing and industrial demand coexist.

Silver’s Dual Engine: Rates And Industry

Gold still dominates as the pure safe haven, backed by central bank buying and reserve asset status. Egilinsky describes it as having “more flight to safety aspect than its brethren Silver.”

Silver, however, has a second growth lever: industrial demand. This is something silver has but gold doesn’t: leverage to economic activity. Rate cuts don’t just weaken the dollar — they support capital spending, infrastructure investment, and industrial demand.

Egilinsky points to structural drivers—semiconductors, data centers, solar, and electrification—as transformative sources of demand for silver. In a rate-cut environment that also supports capital spending and AI infrastructure, silver’s industrial exposure becomes a feature, not a risk.

That dual role enables silver to rally even without a risk-off shock.

Volatility As A Feature, Not A Bug

“Historically, Silver has tended to be more volatile than Gold,” Egilinsky noted, adding that the recent rally has already been accompanied by rising trading volumes. If global economic activity remains resilient and AI and energy spending persist, silver could outperform gold in the next phase of the cycle.

Investor Takeaway: This isn’t just a cyclical spike. A debt-driven Fed pivot plus secular industrial demand creates a rare two-sided tailwind for silver. Gold thrives on fear. Silver thrives on policy easing and growth. In this cycle, that hybrid profile may be exactly what makes silver the accidental Fed trade.
