U.S. stocks settled mostly lower on Thursday, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 300 points during the session.

Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) jumped 11% after delivering blockbuster second-quarter results and upbeat revenue guidance. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) climbed about 4% after reporting strong Azure revenues.

The combined market value of the Magnificent Seven swelled past $19.4 trillion, with both Microsoft and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) worth more than $4 trillion.

On the economic data front, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rose to 2.6% in June from 2.3% in May, surpassing the 2.5% forecast. Core PCE, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, held at 2.8%, above the 2.7% consensus. U.S. initial jobless claims rose by 1,000 from the previous week to 218,000 in the fourth week of July, compared to market estimates of 224,000.

Most sectors on the S&P 500 closed on a negative note, with materials, real estate and health care stocks recording the biggest losses on Thursday. However, communication services and utilities stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.

The Dow Jones closed lower by 330 points to 44,130.98 on Thursday. The S&P 500 fell 0.37% to 6,339.39, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.03% to 21,122.45 during Thursday’s session.

Investors are awaiting earnings results from Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX), Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:XOM) and WW Grainger Inc. (NYSE:GWW) today.

• Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) reported upbeat second-quarter financial results after the market closed Thursday. Amazon reported second-quarter net sales of $167.7 billion, up 13% year-over-year. The net sales total beat a Street consensus estimate of $161.9 billion according to data from Benzinga Pro. Amazon shares fell 6.6% to $218.60 in the after-hours trading session.

• Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) posted stronger-than-expected third-quarter results. The iPhone maker reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $94 billion, beating analyst estimates of $89.04 billion by 5.6%. Earnings per share came in at $1.57, surpassing the consensus estimate of $1.42 per share, according to Benzinga Pro data. Apple shares gained 2.4% to $212.59 in the after-hours trading session.
• Analysts expect WW Grainger Inc. (NYSE:GWW) to post quarterly earnings of $10.04 per share on revenue of $4.52 billion before the opening bell. WW Grainger shares fell 0.3% to close at $1,039.54 on Thursday.

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) shares are moving higher Thursday after the company reported better-than-expected financial results for the second quarter and issued strong guidance.

What Happened: Meta beat analyst estimates on the top and bottom lines, reporting second-quarter revenue of $47.52 billion versus estimates of $44.58 billion, and earnings of $7.14 per share versus estimates of $5.79 per share.

Second-quarter revenue was up 22% year-over-year as Family daily active people climbed 6% year-over-year. Ad impressions were up 11% year-over-year and average price per ad increased by 9%. Meta said it generated $25.56 billion in cash flow from operations and $8.55 billion of free cash flow during the quarter. 

Meta guided for third-quarter revenue in the range of $47.5 billion to $50.5 billion versus Benzinga Pro estimates of $45.87 billion. The company noted that it expects full-year 2025 expenses of $114 billion to $118 billion and full-year capital expenditures of $66 billion to $72 billion.

“We’ve had a strong quarter both in terms of our business and community. I’m excited to build personal superintelligence for everyone in the world,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms.

Multiple analysts raised price targets on Meta following the company’s quarterly results.

• Rosenblatt analyst Barton Crockett maintained a Buy rating and raised the price target from $918 to $1086.

• BofA Securities analyst Justin Post maintained a Buy and raised the price target from $775 to $900.

• Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak maintained an Overweight and raised the price target from $750 to $850.

• BMO Capital analyst Brian Pitz maintained a Market Perform rating and raised the price target from $610 to $710.

META Price Action: Meta Platforms shares were up 11.3% at $774.00 at the time of publication Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro.

Wingstop Inc. (NASDAQ:WING) shares jumped around 27% on Wednesday after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter EPS and sales. Avis Budget Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:CAR) fell 15% following worse-than-expected quarterly EPS and sales.

On the economic data front, U.S. pending home sales declined by 0.8% from the previous month in May, following a 1.8% gain in April. The U.S. economy expanded at an annualized rate of 3% in the second quarter following a 0.5% contraction in the previous quarter.
