Elon Musk is at it again…
As the Tesla electric car design already enjoys many accolades related to charging, range, and other electric- car metrics, emerging news from Tesla head and serial innovator Elon Musk suggests we’ll see more infotainment advances in the near future.
A Tale of Two Tweets
A July 27 tweet by Musk hints at new streaming ability in the Tesla cabin, including access to some of the biggest household names in streaming media: Netflix and YouTube.
“Ability to stream YouTube & Netflix when car is stopped coming to your Tesla soon!” Musk tweeted. “Has an amazingly immersive, cinematic feel due to the comfy seats & surround sound audio.”
Some reports on this news show that these entertainment options will be completely limited to use in a stationary vehicle, and not activated while the car is in motion.
However, another Musk tweet coming on the heels of the one previously cited suggests that when self-driving cars come along, viewers will be able to relax and enjoy a video while in transit:
“When full self-driving is approved by regulators, we will enable video while moving.”
Musk also thinks self-driving Teslas will be in play this year.
“I think we will be feature-complete full self-driving this year, meaning the car will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up, take you all the way to your destination without an intervention — this year,” Musk said in a recent ARK Invest interview. “I would say that I am certain of that. That is not a question mark.”
What’s Ahead?
Meanwhile, U.S. legislators are hard at work trying to accommodate new autonomous vehicle technology.
“The new bill is being written with input from both chambers in the hopes of avoiding last year’s breakdown,” writes Andrew Hawkins in The Verge, citing a previous bill that didn’t make it. “In late 2017, the then Republican-controlled House passed the SELF DRIVE Act, which would speed the adoption of self-driving cars and bar states from setting performance standards.”
In response, Tesla stock seems fairly stable after falling off a cliff, losing over 10% of its value June 25. We’ll see whether these new rumors pick up the equity.
