The South African entrepreneur who pioneered Tesla and SpaceX now plans to add underground tunnels to his list of groundbreaking innovations. Recent reporting shows that Musk is funneling some SpaceX resources into his tunneling business.
Tunnel Business Targets China
Today, breaking news suggests that The Boring Company will soon make a home in China.
“Will also be launching The Boring Company China on this trip,” Musk tweeted on August 2, referring to what his team described as a plan to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, which is planned for August 29–31.
U.S. Operations
According to CNET, the first Boring Company tunnel was built in Hawthorne, California last year.
Since then, Musk has talked about problems with American transportation and plans to introduce tunnel operations in American cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City.
Many of those projects have been shelved. But now reporting suggests that Musk may bring his tunnel design to China first.
The new China plan is in addition to past benchmarks for the company. That includes its first American contract, described in TechCrunch as a $48.7M plan to “build and operate an underground ‘people mover’ in Las Vegas, focused on the Las Vegas Convention Center.”
