Elon Musk, who has never shied away from controversy, is yet again the center of attention over claims that Russian forces are using Starlink satellites powered by his SpaceX. Russian Media reports indicate that the Russian troops have been using Starlink terminals in some of the occupied territories. Launched in February of 2022, the satellites were intended to enhance battlefield communications for Ukrainian forces.

Starlink Networks Infiltration

The Starlink networks have enabled Ukrainian forces to communicate via secure internet chat apps. Additionally, they have allowed the troops to stay in contact with each other without relying on cell or radio signals that can be intercepted easily.

Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence insists that there is mounting evidence of the equipment being operated by Russian forces, mostly in the Donetsk area. According to the agency, radio interceptions of conversations affirm the suspicion that Starlink terminals have been installed in units of the Russia brigade operating in the Donetsk region.

The agency also claims to have intercepted an exchange between two soldiers who were discussing setting up the Starlink terminals. The intelligence services have already posted an audio clip affirming what appears to be an exchange between Russian soldiers on the Starlink network. What’s not clear is how the Russian soldiers got hold of the terminals, whether they had procured from abroad or from captured Ukrainian forces.

Russia insists that the Starlink networks have never been supplied to its forces because they are not certified systems. On the other hand, Starlink has hit back over the infiltration claims, insisting that Russia has never operated or marketed its satellite networks. While Starlink systems cannot be purchased in Russia, there have been claims that Russian forces are purchasing the devices from other countries and bringing them to the battlefront.

Musk has also reiterated in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that they have never sold Starlink terminals to Russia, and the report is only false. “To the best of our knowledge, no Starlinks have been sold directly or indirectly to Russia,” Musk said.

SpaceX insists that whenever it obtains knowledge of Starlink terminals being in the wrong hands and used by unsanctioned parties, it investigates the claim and deactivates the terminal thereafter. The space company further states that new users of the Starlink equipment must go through an authentication process to start using the service. SpaceX can track Starlink network users within a specific geographic region. However, determining whether users are Russia or Ukraine in the ongoing war might prove to be a big challenge.

Starlink Politics

It is not the first time that Musk and SpaceX have found themselves in trouble over access to Starlink networks. The satellites have always been politically charged since Musk decided to make them available to Ukrainian forces. In September of 2022, Musk declined a request to make Starlink services available in Sevastopol over claims it could be used to sink Russian ships, which could make it complicit in a major act of war.

When SpaceX said it could no longer make the satellites available to Ukrainian forces last year due to escalating costs, the US Pentagon agreed to pay to keep the services running. In the recent past, private donors, governments, and other organizations have also donated funds to ensure Ukrainian forces have access to it.

Crypto Lobby Groups Raise $78M to Influence 2024 Election

It promises to be one of the most consequential elections in the recent past, with President Joe Biden pushing hard to be reelected even as Donald Trump wages one of the fiercest campaigns in the recent past. As the campaigns heat up, the focus will be on the markets, which are expected to be on toes, as has always been the case over the past years. Lobbying is already heating up with the cryptocurrency industry leading the onslaught as it seeks to push for the election of favorable candidates to enact legislation that favors the sector.

Crypto Lobbying War Chest

Political action committees (PAC) funded by cryptocurrency leaders have built a campaign war chest of $78 million that they plan to use to influence the 2024 election. The action committees led by Fairshake, Protect Progress and Defend American Jobs plan to use a good chunk of money to support pro-crypto candidates.

The three super committees can potentially raise more money as the cryptocurrency industry seeks to safeguard its interest at one of the most pivotal moments. Fairshake has been one of the most aggressive, having received donations from more than 20 wealthy and influential players in the crypto scene.

Andreessen Horowitz, one of the biggest crypto proponents, has been one of the biggest donors donating money to finance crypto-friendly politicians. Crypto exchange giant Coinbase and venture capital executive Fred Wilson have also aggressively donated money to crypto funding campaigns.

Tech executives Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and Ripple have also joined the bandwagon of raising funds to support crypto-friendly politicians. However, the industry lost one of its biggest spenders, former crypto king Sam Bankman Fried, who is in jail, having spent more than $36 million during the midterm elections.

Clamping Regulatory Pressure

The sector has come under immense pressure in recent months amid soaring regulatory pressure and scrutiny from the US Securities Exchange. Coinbase and Binance are cryptocurrency exchanges targeted over how they handle people’s money and sell cryptos. Ripple is another cryptocurrency that has been at loggerheads with the SEC over allegations it sold XRP tokens as securities.

Donations for crypto-friendly campaigns have been growing as the investors push to support like-minded candidates to make for friendly legislation that would fuel growth and accelerate innovation in the sector. In addition, the investors will oppose candidates who plan to kill America’s advanced technologies, including blockchain and cryptocurrency.

Nevertheless, the candidates that the committees will back next year are still unclear. Currently, most committees are spending millions of dollars on television advertisements as they support a select group of lawmakers. Fair shake super PAC has spent close to $1 million on ads.

The push to support crypto-friendly politicians comes as the overall cryptocurrency market returns after being under pressure for the better part of the year. Renewed hope of the US SEC approving a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund has fuelled a buying spree in the crypto market. Bitcoin has already powered and found support above the $40,000 a coin level,  on hopes of a Bitcoin ETF that would attract institutional investors into the sector.

The 2022 Dogs of the Dow beat the major indices, even in a “ruff” year. In fact, while the Dogs of the Dow stocks fell 1.6% on the year, once you add in the dividend payouts, the Dogs returned 2% on the year. 

And while 2% may not sound like a big win, consider that, in 2022, one of the worst years on record since 2008, the NASDAQ lost 33%.  The S&P 500 lost 19%.  The Dow Jones lost about 9%. That 2% doesn’t look so bad now, does it?

In 2021, the Dogs of the Dow returned about 16.3%. While 2020 wasn’t a great year for the Dogs, most other years have done very well.  In 2019, the Dogs were up 20%.  In 2018, they were up about 1%, but still beat the Dow, which fell close to 6%.  In 2017, the dogs were up 19%.  In 2016, they were up 16%.

As for the year ahead, the top 10 Dogs of the Dow to consider are Amgen (AMGN), Coca-Cola (KO), Cisco (CSCO), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Chevron (CVX), Dow (DOW), 3M (MMM), Verizon (VZ), and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA).

The report indicates that the revolutionary technology could boost earnings in the banking sector to over $340 billion annually, thanks to increased productivity.

Nvidia Blockbuster Rally To Slow on 2024 amid China Headwind and Valuation Concerns

Nvidia is unlikely to replicate the stellar performance that has seen its share price more than tipple and become a trillion-dollar company next year. That’s the sentiment echoed on Wall Street as the stock has struggled to rally at an explosive pace as it did early in the year on delivering better-than-expected earnings in the last two reports.

China Headwind

While the stock has rallied by more than 220% in 2023, analysts only expect the stock to rally by 36%  in the next 12 months. While it is a significant return, it is still less than the blockbuster year the company had 2023 on benefiting from the artificial intelligence boom. The chip giant has emerged as the poster child behind the revolutionary technology owing to the strong demand for its graphic processing units.

The stock has come under immense pressure in the recent past, with a share of the company dropping by nearly 4% on growing concerns over escalating US chip curbs that could sap growth in China. It has struggled to find support above the $500 a share level, with analysts attributing  the weakness to the company pushing back on the release of a new artificial intelligence chip destined for China until next year

The company has to redesign the chip for the Chinese market while simultaneously trying to comply with the US export rules. The pushback comes from the US Commerce Department reiterating tightening rules that target Chinese access to AI and other advanced technologies. The new curbs will focus on the most high-tech chips that remain banned for export without a license.

China remains the company’s third largest market, and any standoff with the US could significantly take a toll on Nvidia’s prospects of curtailing the AI-driven boom. Nvidia has already acknowledged that increasing tension between China and the US over chip technologies could result in tighter export controls that could affect its business. Nevertheless, the company still projects revenue of $20 billion for the current quarter, beating analysts’ consensus estimates by over $2 billion.

Nvidia Outlook

After rallying by more than 200% year to date, there have been growing concerns about Nvidia’s stock valuation. Many have questioned the premium valuation as the company faces stiff competition from other chip giants investing in chips needed to power the artificial intelligence revolution.

Nevertheless, NVidia stock still trades at an earnings per share multiple  of around 23 times its consensus forecast   earnings for 2024  and 20 times forecast earnings for 2023. It’s the fact that the stock is cheaper than Apple and Microsoft that has continued to fuel bullish bets on the stock.

Analysts at Melius Research have already reiterated a  buy rating on the stock with a  $750 price target, implying a gain of nearly 50% from current levels. The average price target on Wall Street is $668. However, after a  220% plus rally, the bar is exceptionally high, presenting a significant challenge heading into 2024. Similarly, headwinds like China could become a  big problem that could rattle stock sentiments and prospects in the market.

Elon Musk Touts Cybertruck Production Nightmare amid Delays

Tesla has dug a grave for itself as it tries to integrate every kind of feature and technology on the Cybertruck. That’s the sentiment echoed by CEO Elon Musk, who believes it could take 12 to 18 months for the automaker to hit any high volumes with its next-generation piece of technology.

Cybertruck Nightmare

A stainless body that is corrosion resistant is not the only thing that Tesla has to worry about as it eyes mass Cybertruck production. It will be the first high-voltage vehicle designed for faster charging. The fact that the car is dependent on battery cells produced in-house presents a unique set of challenges.

Over the years, Tesla has relied on batteries produced by other companies to power Model X and Model S. However, as it seeks to integrate faster charging, Tesla is moving battery production in-house, presenting yet another manufacturing headache.

The EV giant has already taken orders for the Cybertruck, with pricing starting from $39,000 and ranging to $69,900. However, it has removed price and specifications from its website, having been hit with production delays.

The delay is mainly attributed to Musk’s pushing to use an ultrahard stainless steel alloy similar to the one SpaceX uses on its Starship. While stainless steel is a perfect fit for the vehicle as it resists corrosion and does not need to be painted, it is costly and difficult to shape and weld together.

Consequently, Cybertruck is slowly emerging as another manufacturing headache similar to the challenges that Tesla has faced with Model X. Six years later; Tesla is yet to achieve high-volume production with its flagship Model X sport utility car.

Like the Cybertruck, the Model X comes with all kinds of cool things that people could ever imagine as Tesla sought to affirm its status in self-driving cars. Musk has termed the Model X the Fabergé egg of cars, featuring symbols of opulence integrated into precious metals and gemstones. Musk has already insisted it was a terrible strategy to incorporate all cool things at once instead of starting simple and adding things slowly over time.

Simplicity has already proved to be the real deal, going to the level of success that Tesla has enjoyed with the Model 3 Sedan and the Model Y SUV. The two cars have broken into the mainstream, affirming Tesla as the most valuable electric vehicle automaker.

The simplicity of the two vehicles, as they do not come with all the fancy features or high-end technologies, has allowed Tesla to ramp up production. In return, the automaker has fulfilled the ever-growing demand for electric vehicles.

Production Delays

However, that is not expected with Cybertruck, which comes with various features and technologies. Musk reiterating that it will take 12 to 18 months of blood, sweat, and tears to achieve high volumes affirms the work that needs to be done. It is highly unlikely that the EV giant will reach an annualized production rate of 250,000 Cybertruck by 2025.

Tesla is unlikely to go slow on the Cybertruck, even with one analyst on Wall Street reiterating it would be good for the company’s shares. Musk has made it his intention to transform pickup trucks, which he insists have looked more or less the same over the last century.

Investors Turn to Emerging markets Amid Cheaper Valuations

Heightened volatility and premium valuations in developed nations have made emerging markets attractive investment prospects. The premium valuations that have come to play behind one of the strongest bull runs in US equity are forcing investors to pursue high-risk reward opportunities in emerging markets. Total inflows into exchange traded funds that track developing nations have already risen to highs of $10 billion for the year at the back of the $1.7 trillion equity rally and gains on the bond markets.

Immediate data indicate that net deposits into ETFs that invest in developing nations increased to $766.1 million for the week ended November 24. The increase affirms strong interest in emerging equity markets, which are again on a roll after coming under pressure at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. However it was a slight drop from the previous weeks inflows

India has emerged as one of the most sought after emerging markets, judging by the capital inflows into ETFs with exposure to the country. Attractive demographics, unique supply and demand dynamics, and a stable democracy have made it attractive for investors eyeing exposure in emerging markets. In addition, investors are becoming increasingly confident.

Emerging markets and bond markets have received significant inflows after coming under immense pressure last year. The softening of inflationary pressures has seen demand for market risk increase significantly. In addition, emerging market valuations are highly attractive compared to valuations in developed nations, especially the US.

With the S&P 500 up by about 18% and tech-heavy Nasdaq up by more than 40% for the year, there are growing concerns that US equities are overstretched on the valuations front. Consequently, investors increasingly turn their attention to emerging markets with attractive valuations as they bounce back from last year’s slowdown and COVID-19-engineered slowdown.

Analysts expect cheaper valuations in emerging markets, a weakening dollar, and a peaking of US Federal rate pricing to bolster sentiment on emerging market assets. Korea and Taiwan are other attractive markets owing to the booming semiconductor and hardware technology business.

China Slowdown

On the other hand, investors are avoiding China as it remains a big risk amid an equity market that is increasingly being driven by earnings. The world’s second-largest economy faces several problems, the key being slow growth and a property market in disarray. The country’s recovery from the pandemic has slowed in recent months, fuelled by turmoil in the property market. Slowing demand for the country’s manufactured goods as global growth also slows continues to pose significant risks.

Amid increased focus on emerging markets, there is also uncertainty about whether the rally is sustainable. EM markets can be highly volatile when hit with headwinds. On the other hand, developed markets like the US have some stability. Equities are looking increasingly attractive, with the US appearing to have peaked on monetary policy tightening. Following a deep pullback in Q3, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq have rebounded, recouping all losses and affirming renewed interest in US equities.
