(Reuters) -An off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut off the engines of an Alaska Airlines jet during a flight over the Pacific Northwest said he was having a nervous breakdown and had previously ingested psychedelic mushrooms, court documents released on Tuesday show.

Joseph David Emerson, 44, of Pleasant Hill, California, an Alaska Airlines pilot who was riding on Sunday in a jump seat in the cockpit during the flight, was charged in a federal criminal complaint on Tuesday with one count of interfering with flight crew members and attendants. Emerson was separately charged in Oregon state court with 83 counts of attempted murder and a single count of endangering an aircraft.

After his arrest, he told an officer that he had previously taken psychedelic – or “magic” – mushrooms for the first time and had been depressed for the past six months, according to an FBI affidavit. He said he believed he was having a nervous breakdown and had not slept for 40 hours.

State court documents say Emerson had taken “magic mushrooms” about 48 hours before the incident. Alaska Airlines said Tuesday that at no time during the check-in or boarding process did employees observe any signs of impairment that would have led them to prevent Emerson from flying.

“I messed everything up,” Emerson said, according to the criminal complaint, adding that he “tried to kill everybody.” Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 was operated by Alaska Air Group’s regional subsidiary Horizon Air, the carrier said.

After the attempt to disable the engines, Emerson – in wrist restraints – tried to grab the handle of an emergency exit during the flight’s descent but was stopped by a flight attendant, prosecutors said. He had told crew: “You need to cuff me right now or it’s going to be bad.”

Emerson was riding as a validated “jump seat” passenger in the cockpit of the plane – a routine mode of transport for commercial airline pilots hitching flights back home or to their next assignment, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Emerson is set to make his first appearance at 2:05 p.m. PT (2105 GMT) in Multnomah County court, according to a spokesperson for the local prosecutor in Portland, Oregon, where formal charges were expected to be filed.

He was booked into jail on 83 state counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of endangering an aircraft.

In a notice seen by Reuters, the FAA told U.S. airlines that the off-duty pilot had sought to disable the engines of the Embraer 175 by attempting to activate the engines’ fire-suppression system while the plane was at cruise altitude.

The action occurred shortly after Emerson said, “I’m not OK.” A pilot grabbed Emerson’s wrist while the other declared an in-flight emergency and then one pilot physically engaged Emerson before he left the cockpit.

“I pulled both emergency shutoff handles because I thought I was dreaming and I just wanna wake up,” Emerson said, according to the complaint.

Emerson joined Alaska Air Group as a Horizon first officer in August 2001 and later a pilot, Alaska Airlines said, adding that “at no point were his certifications denied, suspended or revoked.” Aviators are expected to self-report any mental health conditions.

Adam Silverthorne, president of California-based NRI Flying Club, said the incident was incongruous with the kindhearted, methodical family man he knew Emerson to be several years ago when Emerson was a club member and provided flight instruction. A club newsletter mentioned that Emerson was at NRI in 2016.

The FAA told airlines in a separate notice on Monday that the incident “is not connected in any way, shape or form to current world events” but said it is “always good practice to maintain vigilance.”

(Reuters) – Global stocks advanced on Tuesday as positive corporate earnings spurred some investor risk appetite, although caution remained given the war in the Middle East and mixed economic data ahead of closely-watched interest rate policy decisions.

Oil fell further after weak economic data suggested reduced demand, eclipsing worries that the Israel-Hamas war could escalate into a wider conflict in the crude-exporting region.

The U.S. dollar gained, while bitcoin was up another 7%, adding to its biggest one-day rally in a year on Monday.

On Wall Street, upbeat forecasts from Verizon, Coca-Cola and other companies boosted optimism about corporate America’s health in the face of a slowing economy and higher inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6%, the S&P 500 gained 0.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.9%.

U.S. business activity ticked higher in October and output in the euro zone took a surprise turn for the worse, surveys showed on Tuesday.

Sameer Samana, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said recent economic data suggests that parts of Europe, especially Germany, may be headed for recession, while the U.S. data was better than expected.

“Geopolitics and politics continue to hang over the market’s head, but it’s hard to know which way they will break,” Samana wrote. “We would continue to play defense within both equities and fixed income, while waiting for a better opportunity to add risk.”

The MSCI All-World index rose about 0.5%, while an index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged above a one-year low.

In Europe, the STOXX 600 added 0.44%, with declines in banking shares such as Barclays offset by gains in the likes of luxury group LVMH and Swiss computer parts maker Logitech.

Investors do not expect the European Central Bank to raise interest rates when it meets this week, but are still prepared for borrowing costs to remain high.

“The looming spectre of inflation grows even more imposing, especially considering the recent sharp ascent in oil prices,” said Dalma Capital Chief Investment Officer Gary Dugan.

“If oil prices persist at this level throughout the rest of 2023 and into 2024, this could potentially inject another bout of inflation into the global economy.”

THE 5% CLUB

Global bond yields have surged in recent weeks, in part because of a growing belief that central banks will have no room to cut interest rates until well into 2024.

The run-up in yields on the 10-year Treasury note to 5% on Monday reflected that belief. The 10-year note was last yielding 4.819%, little changed on the day.

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said he believed U.S. rates would stay higher for longer, given the amount of fiscal stimulus entering an already resilient economy and robust wage growth.

“I do believe the Federal Reserve will have to raise rates higher, which probably will mean that by 2025 we may have a soft landing. We may have hard landing. That is the only way that I see that we’ll be arresting this. But I don’t expect it any time soon,” Fink said at a gathering of financial leaders in Riyadh.

Investor attention will be split this week between the earnings of high-profile companies, including Microsoft, Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Amazon, as well as a slew of economic data ahead of the Fed’s meeting from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.

Third-quarter gross domestic product data on Thursday, along with the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) report, the U.S. central bank’s preferred inflation gauge, on Friday, could help shape medium-term expectations for U.S. rates.

In the currency market, the dollar rose 0.6% against a basket of currencies, reversing Monday’s 0.5% drop.

The yen held steady against the dollar, but was not too far from 150 per dollar – a level markets believe could prompt Japanese authorities to intervene to prop up the currency.

“We believe this current dollar weakness is corrective in nature,” Brown Brothers Harriman & Co strategists wrote in a note. “Looking beyond the current noise related to dovish Fed comments, nothing fundamentally has changed and we see no reason to believe the dollar’s uptrend has ended.” 

In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin rose to 18-month highs, as speculation about the possibility of an exchange-traded fund drove enthusiasm and prompted short-sellers to exit positions. The world’s biggest cryptocurrency eased slightly to $33,712, up about 7% on the day.

Oil prices extended losses for a third straight session after a flurry of economic data from Germany, the wider euro zone and Britain sketched a bearish picture which could weigh on oil demand. U.S. crude and Brent both settled down about 2% per barrel on the day.

Spot gold was little changed at $1,972 an ounce.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Apple on Tuesday will announce plans to make parts, tools and documentation needed to fix its iPhones and computers available to independent repair shops and consumers nationwide, the White House said.

The company will also now support a national U.S. right-to-repair bill, the White House said, a major step to reduce costs for consumers. Apple was for years criticized by consumer advocates who said its sleek devices were difficult and expensive to fix and that the company provided little support for repairs.

In recent years, Apple executives have begun touting the longevity and resale value of its devices while making it easier to fix them and to access spare parts. Apple started distributing parts and manuals to some independent repair shops in 2019. In August, Apple came out in support of right-to-repair legislation in its home state of California.

Apple’s support for a federal bill that might be modeled after the California bill comes as part of a broader push by President Joe Biden to promote competition and crack down on so-called junk fees and other actions that increase prices for consumers. The latest effort is aimed at giving consumers more control over fixing what they own, from tractors to smart phones.

National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard made the announcement in remarks prepared for a White House event later Tuesday focused on the so-called “right to repair,” calling on Congress to pass legislation requiring such action across the country.

Brainard said California, Colorado, New York and Minnesota had already passed right to repair laws, and 30 other states had introduced similar legislation.

She said Apple supported a nationwide law and had endorsed the California law – which requires companies to make the parts, tools and documentation needed for repairs of consumer electronic devices and appliances available to independent repair shops and consumers at fair and reasonable prices – and would do the same nationwide.

Manufacturers too often made it difficult to access spare parts, manuals, and tools necessary to fix items from smartphones to wheelchairs to farm equipment, Brainard said, forcing consumers to pay high repair costs, or discard and replace the device.

Repairing consumer electronics devices instead could save American consumers $49.6 billion annually, Brainard said, and reduce the U.S.’s nearly 7 million tons of annual electronic waste, while boosting small independent repair shops.

While Apple has provided spare parts to repair shops since 2019, the California bill also requires it to supply diagnostic tools to those shops as well. Apple said it plans to follow the same model nationally as it does in California.

But some consumer advocates reacted to Tuesday’s news with reservations because Apple’s embrace of repairs has often come with caveats.

Nathan Proctor, who leads right-to-repair campaign efforts for advocacy group called U.S. PIRG, said Apple’s earlier efforts required repair shops to sign restrictive contracts that prevented them from keeping a stockpile of spare parts on hand for quicker walk-in repairs, making it hard to compete with Apple’s own repair services.

Proctor said his group will follow the details of any federal legislation that emerges.

“It’s really going to depend on people’s experience in the real world – that’s what we care about,” Proctor said. “We’re going to keep watch-dogging Apple and the other companies.”

(Reuters) – An attorney suing Tesla over a fatal accident cited an internal safety analysis conducted by the company that showed it knew about a steering malfunction in its Autopilot driver assistant feature about two years earlier.

The disclosure came during closing arguments on Tuesday in a California state court in the first U.S. trial over allegations that Autopilot led to a death. The plaintiffs are seeking a combined $400 million jury award, excluding punitive damages. The trial’s outcome could help shape similar cases across the country.

The civil lawsuit alleges the Autopilot system caused owner Micah Lee’s Model 3 to suddenly veer off a highway east of Los Angeles at 65 miles per hour (105 km per hour), strike a palm tree and burst into flames, all in the span of seconds.

The 2019 crash killed Lee and seriously injured his two passengers, including a then-8-year-old boy who was disemboweled, court documents show. The lawsuit, filed against Tesla by the passengers, accuses the company of knowing that Autopilot and other safety systems were defective when it sold the car.

Tesla has denied liability, saying Lee consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel. The electric-vehicle maker also claims it was unclear whether Autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash.

Tesla has been testing and rolling out its Autopilot and more advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, which Chief Executive Elon Musk has touted as crucial to his company’s future but which has drawn regulatory and legal scrutiny.

Jonathan Michaels, who represents the passengers, showed jurors a 2017 internal Tesla safety analysis identifying “incorrect steering command” as a defect, involving an “excessive” steering wheel angle.

“They predicted this was going to happen. They knew about it. They named it,” Michaels said. Tesla developed a protocol to deal with customers who experienced it, he said, and instructed employees to accept no liability or responsibility for the problem.

Tesla attorney Michael Carey briefly addressed jurors before a break, saying Michaels’ arguments were “just not true.” Carey is expected to continue later on Tuesday.

Michaels argued Tesla released Autopilot in an experimental stage because the company desperately needed to increase market share.

“They had no regard for the loss of life,” he said.

(Reuters) -California’s auto regulator said on Tuesday it has suspended General Motors’ Cruise autonomous vehicle deployment and driverless testing permits, saying it had misrepresented information related to the safety of the autonomous technology.

Cruise’s AVs posed an “an unreasonable risk to public safety,” and “are not safe for the public’s operation” California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) said in a statement.

The suspension, which came after a series of accidents involving Cruise vehicles, is a major setback to GM’s self-driving technology unit and to the nascent autonomous vehicle (AV) industry. The suspension was effective immediately.

GM has previously insisted Cruise represents a “giant growth opportunity.”

In June, GM CEO Mary Barra reiterated a forecast that Cruise could generate $50 billion a year in annual revenue by 2030, a target the company has not backed away from. The automaker reported on Tuesday that it lost $723 million on Cruise during the third quarter.

The DMV added that Tuesday’s “decision does not impact the company’s permit for testing with a safety driver.”

Cruise issued a statement saying it “will be pausing operations of our driverless AVs in San Francisco.”

Cruise said the California Department of Motor Vehicles reviewed an incident on Oct. 2, when one of its self-driving vehicles was putting on the brakes but did not avoid striking a pedestrian who had previously been struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Cruise said that in that incident, “a human hit and run driver tragically struck and propelled the pedestrian into the path of the AV” which struck the pedestrian.

“When the AV tried to pull over, it continued before coming to a final stop, pulling the pedestrian forward,” the company said.

“Our teams are currently doing an analysis to identify potential enhancements to the AV’s response to this kind of extremely rare event,” it added.

In August, the regulator said it was investigating “concerning incidents” involving autonomous vehicles operated by Cruise in San Francisco and asked the company to take half its robotaxis off the roads. That month, a Cruise robotaxi was involved in a crash with an emergency vehicle in San Francisco.

Barra said the Cruise robotaxis have better safety records than human drivers.

Automated vehicles have drawn growing public and regulatory scrutiny. This month, U.S. auto safety regulators opened a probe into whether Cruise was taking sufficient precautions with its autonomous robotaxis to safeguard pedestrians.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said has received two reports from Cruise of incidents in which pedestrians were injured, and identified two further incidents via videos posted on websites.

The suspensions came just several months after Alphabet Inc’s Waymo and Cruise were allowed to take paying passengers day or night throughout San Francisco, a significant step forward for the technology.

Shares in GM were down 1.7% in afternoon trading in New York, at their lowest in more than three years. They have fallen some 17% since UAW workers went on strike against the Detroit Three automakers. UAW on Tuesday expanded strike action to GM’s assembly plant in Texas that builds its profitable full-size sport utility vehicles.

BENGALURU (Reuters) -Oil prices fell on Tuesday for the third straight session after a flurry of slow economic data from Germany, the euro zone and Britain weighed on the outlook for energy demand.

Brent crude futures fell $1.76, or 2%, to settle at $88.07 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell $1.75, or 2.1%, to close at $83.74 a barrel.

Euro zone business activity data took a surprise downward turn this month, suggesting the bloc may slip into recession.

German readings suggested a recession in that country is underway. Britain’s businesses reported another monthly decline in activity, highlighting recession risks ahead of the Bank of England’s interest rate decision next week.

“There is definitely a dialogue on about the global economy being worse this week than it was last week,” said Mizuho analyst Robert Yawger.

“It does not help that a lot of the top bankers and financial experts are in Saudi Arabia today talking about how bad the economy is,” Yawger added, referring to the Future Investment Initiative event dubbed “Davos in the Desert.”

In contrast to Europe, U.S. data showed business output ticked higher in October as manufacturing pulled out of a five-month contraction. The relative strength of the U.S. economy helped lift the dollar, making dollar-denominated oil more expensive for holders of other currencies.

“As much as this market has been worried about the war in the Middle East and efforts from Saudi Arabia to tighten supply, demand has been a major headwind for a while now,” said John Kilduff, partner at New York-based Again Capital.

The release of hostages from Gaza and intensifying diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict between Israel and Hamas have also taken out the risk premium that helped push Brent prices to their highest in a month on Friday, Kilduff and Yawger said.

Oil benchmarks had dipped more than 2% on Monday on the diplomatic efforts.

Also on Tuesday, the International Energy Agency said it expects fossil fuel demand to peak by 2030 based on governments’ current policies.

In the United States, a weekly rise in crude stockpiles was expected in a preliminary Reuters poll.

U.S. storage reports are due from the American Petroleum Institute industry group at 4:30 p.m. EDT (2030 GMT) and from the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. EDT (1430 GMT).

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – The board of Brazilian state-run oil giant Petrobras should decide whether or not extra dividends will be paid out near the end of the year, the firm’s Chief Financial Sergio Caetano told Reuters on Tuesday.

“No decision has been taken as to whether or not Petrobras will pay an extra dividend, this will happen at the right time, toward the end of the fiscal year,” he said.

(Reuters) -Dozens of U.S. states are suing Meta Platforms and its Instagram unit, accusing them of fueling a youth mental health crisis by making their social media platforms addictive.

In a complaint filed in the Oakland, California, federal court on Tuesday, 33 states including California and New York said Meta repeatedly misled the public about the dangers of its platforms, and knowingly induced young children and teenagers into addictive and compulsive social media use. Meta also operates Facebook.

“Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens,” the complaint said. “Its motive is profit.”

Children have long been an appealing demographic for big business in the hope of attracting them as consumers at a young age when they may be more impressionable and solidifying brand loyalty. For Meta, younger consumers may help secure more advertisers who hope kids will buy their products as they grow up.

But the states noted research has associated children’s use of Meta’s social media platforms with “depression, anxiety, insomnia, interference with education and daily life, and many other negative outcomes.”

Meta said it was “disappointed” in the lawsuit.

“Instead of working productively with companies across the industry to create clear, age-appropriate standards for the many apps teens use, the attorneys general have chosen this path,” the company said.

Eight other U.S. states and Washington, D.C. are filing similar lawsuits against Meta on Tuesday, bringing the total number of authorities taking action against the Menlo Park, California-based company to 42.

The cases are the latest in a string of legal actions against social media companies on behalf of children and teens.

Meta, ByteDance’s TikTok and Google’s YouTube already face hundreds of lawsuits filed on behalf of children and school districts about the addictiveness of social media.

In Tuesday’s cases, Meta could face civil penalties of $1,000 to $50,000 for each violation of various state laws — an amount that could add up quickly given the millions of children and teens who use Instagram.

Meta shares were down 0.6% in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.

‘CULTIVATING ADDICTION’

Much of the focus on Meta stemmed from a whistleblower’s release of documents in 2021 that showed the company knew Instagram, which began as a photo-sharing app, was addictive and worsened body image issues for some teen girls.

The lawsuit by the 33 states alleged that Meta has strived to ensure that young people spend as much time as possible on social media despite knowing that they are susceptible to the need for approval in the form of “likes” from other users about their content.

“Meta has been harming our children and teens, cultivating addiction to boost corporate profits,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta, whose state includes Meta’s headquarters.

The company was also accused of violating a law banning the collection of data of children under age 13, and deceptively denying that its social media was harmful.

“Meta did not disclose that its algorithms were designed to capitalize on young users’ dopamine responses and create an addictive cycle of engagement,” it added.

Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter that plays a role in feelings of pleasure.

The complaint said Meta’s refusal to accept responsibility extended to the company’s effort last year to distance itself from a 14-year-old girl’s suicide in the UK after she was exposed on Instagram to content about suicide and self-injury.

A coroner rejected a Meta executive’s claim that such content was “safe” for children, finding that the girl likely binged on harmful content that normalized the depression she had felt before killing herself.

The states alleged Meta is seeking to expand its harmful practices into virtual reality, including its Horizon Worlds platform and the WhatsApp and Messenger apps.

State authorities are seeking to patch holes left by the U.S. Congress’ inability to pass new online protections for children despite years of discussions.

Colorado Attorney General Philip Weiser said the whistleblower’s revelations showed that Meta knew how Facebook and Instagram were harming children.

“It is very clear that decisions made by social media platforms, like Meta, are part of what is driving mental health harms, physical health harms, and threats that we can’t ignore,” he said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -The dollar rose against a basket of currencies on Tuesday as a slew of fresh economic data highlighted the strength of the U.S. economy relative to the United Kingdom and the European Union.

U.S. business output ticked higher in October as the manufacturing sector pulled out of a five-month contraction on a pickup in new orders, and services activity accelerated modestly amid signs of easing inflationary pressures, S&P Global said on Tuesday.

It was the latest sign the U.S. economy is withstanding the surge in interest rates, spurred by the Federal Reserve’s campaign to beat back inflation.

The dollar index, which measures the currency’s strength against a basket of six rivals, was 0.6% higher at 106.27. The index had slipped to a one-month low of 105.35 earlier in the session.

“The big picture still clearly remains intact, especially when you compare U.S. PMI to the concurrent releases out of the UK and the euro zone this morning,” said Helen Given, FX trader at Monex USA.

“While all three PMI readings for the U.S. (manufacturing, services, and composite) were positive, both the UK and the euro zone showed contractions, re-emphasizing the continuing resilience of the larger U.S. economy in comparison to its peers around the world.”

Earlier on Tuesday, survey data showed euro zone business activity took a surprise turn for the worse this month in a broad-based downturn across the region, suggesting the bloc may slip into recession.

The euro was last 0.8% lower at $1.0588.

German data was particularly glum. The purchasing managers’ index survey showed the service sector joined the manufacturing sector in contractionary territory.

The Bank of England is due to set interest rates on Thursday next week, after the Fed’s decision on Wednesday. The European Central Bank’s meeting ends this Thursday, with traders expecting all three central banks to hold rates steady.

“The October flash PMI surveys suggest that economic activity got off to a weak start in Q4, especially in Europe,” Capital Economics global economist Ariane Curtis said in a note.

“And with weak activity taking some of the steam out of labor markets and inflation, we are growing more confident in our view that the Fed, ECB and Bank of England are done hiking policy rates,” she said.

Global financial markets have been gripped by a surge in U.S. bond yields, which on Monday pushed the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield above 5% to its highest since July 2007. The rise in yields drove the dollar index to an almost one-year high earlier this month.

The yield dropped sharply later on Monday. Analysts said one catalyst was a social media message by prominent hedge fund investor Bill Ackman, saying he had closed out his bet against longer-dated bonds and that geopolitical worries were a factor. Yields rise as prices fall and vice versa.

The dollar was last up 0.1% at 149.91 yen, keeping traders nervous about possible government intervention to prop up the Japanese currency.

The British pound was last down 0.72% at $1.2161. Britain’s businesses reported another decline in activity this month and cost pressures cooled further, surveys showed on Tuesday, underlining the risk of recession.

In cryptocurrency markets, bitcoin extended its rise, helped by speculation that an exchange-traded bitcoin fund is imminent. The world’s largest cryptocurrency by market cap was last up 2.4% at $33,850.

(Reuters) -Federal prosecutors on Tuesday charged an off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut off the engines of an Alaska Airlines flight on Sunday over the Pacific Northwest.

Joseph David Emerson, 44, of Pleasant Hill, California, an Alaska Airlines pilot, was charged in a criminal complaint with one count of interfering with flight crew members and attendants.

He told an officer that he had taken psychedelic mushrooms for the first time and been depressed for the past six months and believed he was having a nervous breakdown.

“I messed everything up,” Emerson said, according to the criminal complaint, adding that he “tried to kill everybody.”

Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 was operated by Alaska Air Group’s regional subsidiary Horizon Air, the carrier said.

Prosecutors said that after the cockpit incident Emerson, in wrist restraints, tried to grab the handle of an emergency exit during the flight’s descent but was stopped by a flight attendant.

Emerson was off-duty at the time and riding as a validated “jump seat” passenger in the cockpit of the plane – a routine mode of transport for commercial airline pilots hitching flights back home or to their next assignment, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Emerson is set to make his first appearance at 2:05 p.m. PT (2105 GMT) in Multnomah County court, according to a spokesperson for the local prosecutor in Portland, Oregon, where formal charges were expected to be filed.

He was booked into jail on 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of endangering an aircraft.

The FAA told U.S. airlines in a notice seen by Reuters that the off-duty pilot had sought to disable the engines of the Embraer 175 by attempting to activate the engines’ fire-suppression system while the plane was at cruise altitude.

The action occurred shortly after Emerson said, “I’m not okay.” A pilot grabbed Emerson’s wrist while the other declared an inflight emergency and then one pilot physically engaged Emerson before he left the cockpit.

Emerson joined Alaska Air Group as a Horizon first officer in August 2001 and later a pilot, Alaska Airlines said, adding that “at no point were his certifications denied, suspended or revoked.” Aviators are expected to self-report any mental health conditions.

Adam Silverthorne, president of California-based NRI Flying Club, said the incident was incongruous with the kindhearted, methodical family man he knew Emerson to be several years ago when Emerson was a club member and provided flight instruction. A club newsletter mentioned that Emerson was at NRI in 2016.

The FAA told airlines in a separate notice on Monday that the incident “is not connected in any way, shape or form to current world events” but said it is “always good practice to maintain vigilance.”
