Twitter Snags Fabula AI to Helm the War on ‘Fake News’
There’s big news today on the tech front — social media giant Twitter is picking up the London-based company Fabula AI. And the move may have big ramifications for the tech space.
Some traders hope this emerging news will give Twitter’s flagging stock price a much needed shot in the arm … Although the stock is now trading above its $26 IPO stock price, it’s down over the month. More significantly, it’s down from one-year highs of over $45 per share.
Reports on the acquisition show that Fabula is a company with a leading team of machine learning research professionals in the UK. It works in areas like natural language processing, graph deep learning, as well as machine learning ethics, which innovators like Elon Musk have called indispensable to artificial intelligence progress.
That’s key here. Fabula produces technology that can be good at spotting ‘fake news,’ or the spread of deceptive and untruthful messaging across the internet. Using complex algorithm systems, Fabula studies how less- or non-factual reports spread on social media.
And it’s attempting to create a ‘truth risk scoring platform’ that’s language agnostic. That makes this firm’s brainchild a potential key global tool in fighting disinformation.
It has the promise to make a positive impact on Twitter. The social media platform is under scrutiny and trying to handle its very diverse user base. But the acquisition may have a larger effect on artificial intelligence work in the tech sector…
How Fabula Can Shake Up Tech
So who stands to profit? First, any look at AI should include the renowned ‘FAANG’ group — Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. These are the banner firms in cutting-edge technology and the U.S. tech stock movement.
Fabula’s mission (and the capability acquired by Twitter) will be good for Facebook in particular, as the company works frantically to control negativity around bad and questionable content. CTO Mike Schroepfer’s remarks reveal just how hard Facebook teams are working to achieve better content control.
And Fabula, by reputation, is building that solution capably.
But in looking at firms with skin in the AI game, there’s also Nvidia. The chipmaker has a hand in AI and the even newer and more theoretical field of quantum computing.
Keen on tracking artificial intelligence stocks? Keep an eye on quantum computing. The underlying idea is that by creating a new system of non-binary bits and bytes, quantum computing can vastly energize big data systems, enabling us to create a new AI frontier.
